    Description

    The Mortal Storm (MGM, 1940). One Sheet (27" X 41") Style C.
This is one of those remarkably "sly" posters that has an interesting story to tell. Pre-war 1940 MGM didn't want to alienate the foreign market for the film (primarily, Germany), so they issued this gorgeous one sheet featuring the star-crossed lovers, Margaret Sullavan and James Stewart, with small muddily drawn duo-tone artwork beneath the colorful lovers, that only hints at the strong anti-Nazi message the film contains. The SS Storm Troopers beating people in the Jewish Ghetto are not clearly defined, neither in the posters for the film, nor the film itself. It's an underrated film for Stewart's fine portrayal of a free-thinking, kind hearted "Everyman." There are pinholes in the corners and image, edge wear with small tears and wrinkles, and one piece of paper tape on the verso. There are small crossfold pinpoint separations and fold separations in the borders, an extra vertical crease in the left border, and a small scuff under the title. We have never seen nor sold this beautiful beautiful poster before. Fine+.

    Estimate: $1,200 - $2,200.
