DescriptionThe Caine Mutiny by Alfredo Capitani (Columbia, 1954). Very Fine-. Signed Original Italian Mixed Media Artwork for 4-Fogli Poster on Illustration Paper (19.5" X 27"). Italy is well known among collectors to have some of some of the most beautiful movie posters ever created, thanks in large part to the incredible talents of such artists like Alfredo Capitani. As one of the foremost poster designers in the country, Capitani had a career spanning four decades with a sizable number of illustrations bearing his signature. Working with such major studios as MGM, Columbia, and Fox, Capitani would go on the form BCM, a poster designing company created with fellow artists Luigi Martinati and Anselmo Ballester. Most American posters can't hold a candle to Capitani's fine renderings, especially when compared to the image found on Italy's gorgeous Italian 4 - fogli. Accompanied by incredibly skilled portraits of the main cast, Capitani's piece illustrates the perilous seas faced by the crew of the USS Caine, giving an illusion-like sense of movement to the piece with dynamic style. Done in a combination of dark pastels with highlights of gouache, this amazing piece would be a top-of the-list item for any serious collection. Heritage is pleased to present this original Capitani creation for the very first time, an item unlike any other in existence. There are few flaws to be found in the piece, with signs of handling like edge wear, corner creases, minor bits of surface loss at the edges, and a small tear at the top. There are a couple of pinholes in the upper border and small spots of red paint at the bottom, most likely from the production process. Overall, this original piece of artwork presents very well, proving just as effective an illustration as its massive poster counterpart. Very Fine-.
Estimate: $15,000 - $30,000.
