    Description

Submarine Command by Averardo Ciriello (Paramount, 1951). Fine+. Signed Original Italian Gouache Poster Artwork on Paper (23" X 32.5").
You can almost feel the sea spray on your face when you look at this dynamic painting by Averardo Ciriello, one of Italy's most popular poster artists of the 1940s through the 1970s. As a master at conveying movement and emotion through static images, Ciriello rendered William Holden, William Bendix, and Don Taylor in typically mesmerizing style on this piece of poster artwork, which has been signed by the artist in the upper right corner. There are numerous titles that Ciriello has interpreted into fantastic and fan-favorite illustrations during his prolific career, such as It's a Wonderful Life, Stromboli, Miracle on 34th Street, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Forbidden Planet, Rio Bravo, as well as several Hitchcock and James Bond pictures. A gorgeous piece never before offered at Heritage, this painting presents such indications of use as edge wear, a horizontal fold near the lower edge, pinholes, and small tears. There are a few minor chips, paper lifts, as well as some staining. There are ink notations on the verso, but these do not show through to affect the beautiful artwork on the front.
