    Description

    Napoleon (Pathe Rural / Pathe Natan,1929). French Affiche (30" X 45.5").
This dramatic 1929 country-of-origin stone lithograph is certainly the only original copy on this legendary title that we have ever seen. The story behind the poster is as interesting as the landmark film itself. Pathe Rural was launched in 1926 with Pathe Cinema and the French government developing a program whereby 17.5 mm film could be produced for only 75% of the cost of the regular 35 mm, and being thin enough in construction as to allow over one thousand showings with neither projection damage or without the audience being able to see any difference in quality between the two gauges. This smaller gauge was used in special projectors in small villages and the countryside with populations of less than 5,000 people. In 1929 Bernard Natan had assumed control of Pathe Cinema and the famous Pathe Rooster then had his name emblazoned on posters until 1936. In essence, although the film premiered in Paris in 1927, this isn't really a reissue, but rather a first showing in all rural areas of France that had no venues to show the larger gauge films. Abel Gance's many pioneer techniques...hand held camera usage, triptych camera layouts, etc., are still being studied by young film makers. This is one of those rare chances to obtain an absolute cornerstone piece. The poster has had fine professional linenbacking with some expert minimal touch-up for only tears in the left and right borders, and fold wear with small paper loss in the crossfold and folds. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
