    Czechoslovakian World War I Propaganda (Czechoslovak Recruiting Office, New York, 1918). Posters (3) (25" X 36") and (1) (24" X 36").
Vojtech Preissig (1873-1944) was a Czech typographer, printmaker, designer, illustrator, painter and teacher. He moved to the U.S. in 1910 and worked as an art instructor at Columbia University, Art Students League of New York, and the Wentworth Institute of Boston, where he designed recruitment posters for the U.S. armed forces during WWI, which were specifically aimed at Czech immigrants. Both Preissig and his daughter supported the Czech resistance during both World Wars, and he was arrested in 1940 for doing graphic design work for a resistance driven magazine outlawed by German authorities. He died in June of 1944 in the Dachau concentration camp. This lot features four of his works, one showing soldiers in hand-to-hand combat that reads "Down with the murderers! Up with Democracy!" (mounted on linen), and one depicting a man with an axe and rifle joining a battle entitled, "God strikes at an injustice with a thunderbolt, and a young man with bullets." Two additional posters are included, one with Slovak and Czech flags (masa paperbacked), and the other featuring a soldier on horseback carrying the Slovak flag. Light handling includes pinholes in the corners, a tear in the top border, and/or a stain in the bottom border. Rolled, Very Fine.
