Armored Command (Allied Artists, 1961). Joseph Smith Original Movie Poster Art (30" X 40").
This is a truly magnificent work of art from illustrator Joseph Smith, known for some of the finest movie posters designs of the 1950s through the 1980s. The work appears to be created in gouache and is signed by the artist in the lower left corner. Smith was known for signing the works he was personally very proud of, and this piece truly captures the feel of tank warfare during WWII. Set during the closing days of December, 1944 as the Battle of the Bulge raged in the Ardennes, this movie depicted the events of the American 7th Army as they occupied the Vosges-Alsace region of southern France. What they were unaware of was the impending assault by Nazi forces that were encamped nearby and the all-out war that ensued. This poster art captures the action of the movie and is reminiscent of the pulp magazine and paperback covers that were so popular in the early 1960s. Smith knew the impact of color schemes in his works-- what he called "related harmony"-- and used the reds, grays, greens and blacks to create a gloomy and sinister mood of war. Unfortunately, Allied Artists changed some of these color schemes when they printed the posters. They brightened up the images by adding yellow to everything from the lobbies to the six sheet and concentrated on the tanks themselves, severely cropping the rest of the art for the posters. Nevertheless, the impact of this original work is stunning and highly detailed. There is wear and very minor tears around the edges with some staining in the upper right corner. The upper left corner has been chipped off and there is a diagonal crack near the missing piece. None of this impacts the area of art, which is untouched. Fine/Very Fine on Artists Board.

    Estimate: $3,000 - $6,000.
