    Description

"Und Du?" (Stahlehm Bund der Frontsoldaten, 1929). Very Fine+ on Linen. German Recruiting A1 (23.25" X 33") Ludwig Holwein Artwork.
A German paramilitary group founded directly after the First World War, the Stahlelm, Bund der Frontsoldaten (translated as "Steel Helmet, League of Front Soldiers") was comprised mainly of German veterans that supported a vocal return to an Imperial monarchy. With a message and call similar to James Montgomery Flagg's famous I Want You poster, Und Du? urged the defeated citizens of Germany to resist the Weimar Republic. So popular and effective was Ludwig Holwein's illustration that it would be reused in the coming years for other Stahlhelm posters, the German National People's Party, as well as in posters for the Nazi Party. This original printing of the poster is incredibly difficult to find, even more so than its very rare subsequent printings, and is in great condition for its age. It looks even better after light partial touchup to mild edge wear and creases in the top right border. There is some slight unaddressed foxing in the borders as well. Very Fine+ on Linen.
