Description

    Uncle Tom's Cabin (Paramount, 1918). Lobby Card Set of 9 (11" X 14").
One of several screen adaptations of Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 novel, this version stars Marguerite Clark in the dual role of Little Eva St. Clair/Topsy. Although the picture is presumed lost, these lobby cards provide an excellent glimpse at the film's staging, costumes, and cast. Clark made her Broadway debut in 1900 at the age of 17. After several successful years on stage, the actress signed with Famous Players-Lasky (Paramount) in 1914. Although Clark was thirty-one when she began her film career, she possessed a very youthful, girlish quality, much like Mary Pickford, that appealed to audiences of the day. Standing only 4'10" and weighing 90 pounds, Clark was able to play the roles of much younger characters, which is made obvious by the images of her in this incredible lobby card set. This is the first paper Heritage has presented from the film, and the cards have survived in surprisingly good condition. All of the cards have pinholes in the corners, and the title card has a pinhole in the center of the top border and smudging and staining in the borders. Three cards have a dust shadow in the top border, three cards show smudging, one card has a chip in the top right corner, and one card has foxing in the top right corner. Fine/Very Fine.
