Tora! Tora! Tora! by Robert McCall (20th Century Fox, 1970). Original Mixed Media Deluxe Lobby Card Artwork on Board (39.25" X 27").
Forever remembered as the "Day of Infamy," the unprecedented strike against Pearl Harbor by Japanese fighter pilots on December 7, 1941 finally pushed the U.S. onto the stage of WWII. Directors Richard Fleischer, Kinji Fukasaku, and Toshio Masuda took a novel approach to the attack by presenting both the American and Japanese viewpoints within the film, something that would have been unheard of in previous decades. Featuring artwork found on the #11 lobby card from the deluxe set, this dramatic Robert McCall painting has the stylistic feel of a Japanese sumi-e ink wash painting. So authentic was his effort at the style, many thought for years that the artwork was by a Japanese artist. Included with the piece is a plastic caption of that which appeared on the verso of the lobby card, "11. Banking planes rain destruction on the American fleet at Ford Island." The interior of the painting is in incredible shape, and the outer edges show corner bumps and a slight surface lift at the bottom right corner. There is some discoloration near the edges where the artwork was once matted in a frame. Fine/Very Fine on Art Board.
