Tora! Tora! Tora! by Robert McCall (20th Century Fox, 1969). Very Fine-. Mixed Media Ink & Gouache Original Concept Artwork on Illustration Board (39.5" x 25.75") No. 3 -- "Japanese Carrier Fleet Launches Attack."
A piece painted in deceptively soft colors, the Japanese Kyokujitso-ki, otherwise known as the Rising Sun Flag, takes the place of the dawning sky as the Japanese fleet prepares to launch one of the most infamous attacks in military history. Artist Robert McCall, of NASA and 2001: A Space Odyssey fame, created over two dozen illustrations for this groundbreaking film, using a different artistic style for each perspective in the film. For scenes depicting the Japanese side of attack , McCall embraced the traditional ink wash sumi-e paintings for which Japan is so well known. This illustration features skillful renderings of the Aichi D3A planes used during both waves of the attack, surrounded by cheering crewman on aircraft carriers resembling the ships Sōryū, Hiryū, and the battlecruiser Amagi. A one of a kind piece of art never offered before at Heritage, this incredible painting shows slight edge wear, minute corner bumps, and a few minor surface lifts. There are thin dust shadows at the edges, as well as masking tape and paper tape remnants on the verso at the edges. The bottom edge is slightly rough with a thin surface cut at the right, most likely from the artistic process. Information written on the verso includes the title, number, and size. Very Fine- on Illustration Board.

    Estimate: $4,000 - $8,000.
