Tora! Tora! Tora! by Robert McCall (20th Century Fox, 1969). Fine+. Mixed Media Ink & Gouache Original Concept Artwork on Illustration Board (26.75" X 38.5") No. 5 -- "Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto."
A master artist best known for his realistic series of official NASA space illustrations, Robert McCall also created a number of images for this historic blockbuster, Tora! Tora! Tora! Specifically, his paintings found their place on the film's deluxe lobby cards, featuring two distinct styles corresponding with each of the battling nations. The scenes featuring American troops, ships, and aircraft showcase his exemplary skill at his ultra-detailed classic style. The scenes depicting the Japanese side of the attack, however, vary greatly from what fans typically see in his work. Inspired by traditional sumi-e ink wash paintings, McCall's pieces have a distinctive Japanese flair with their thick lines and flowing movement. That includes this stately portrait of So Yamamura playing the historic Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the officer in charge of both the attack of Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Midway. Heritage proudly presents this fantastic piece of concept art for the first time, one of 26 paintings McCall did for the film. This particular piece shows some signs of use including edge wear, mild corner bumps, a few thin surface scratches, and a minor tear on the paper at the bottom. There is toning near the edges and the piece displays some slight color fading. The lower right corner has faint staining with some warping to the illustration board. There are strips of plastic and masking tape on the verso, as well as the written title, number, and size. Fine+ on Illustration Board.

    Estimate: $4,000 - $8,000.
