Description

They Made Me a Criminal (Warner Brothers, 1939). One Sheet (27" X 41").
Although he had appeared in Four Daughters a year earlier and had received good reviews, it was this film that made John Garfield a star and the new Hollywood "tough guy" in the same mold as Cagney, Robinson and Bogart. Garfield was the perfect choice to embody the role of a professional fighter(Johnnie) who is accused of a murder and who then goes on the run to avoid the law. Garfield had actually trained as a boxer and the film Golden Boy was written specifically for him. It was always a thorn in Garfield's side that the role was given to William Holden instead. But Garfield finally achieved stardom as this film was far better received and has withstood the test of time better than Golden Boy. The film also featured Ann Sheridan as the love interest, Claude Rains as the detective tracking Johnnie down and the Dead End Kids as the gang that idolize Johnnie as their mentor. The picture was directed by Busby Berkeley, an odd choice considering Berkeley was known for choreographing dance sequences in musicals. Posters for this title are somewhat scarce and this example is in nice condition. The poster had a few very small chips in the border and along a few of the fold lines (primarily the vertical fold in the center area and along the lower horizontal fold). There has been some airbrushing in the borders and some very minor color touch-up on the fold lines to correct these issues and the poster is now quite presentable. Very Fine- on Linen.
