    Description

    The Widow's Might (Paramount, 1918). One Sheet (28" X 41").
To understand the importance and rarity of this poster, we need to reflect on the amazing acting ability of Julian Eltinge and how truly gifted a performer he was. Famed for his female impersonations, there is a reason none the less than the editor of Variety called him "as great a performer as there is today." King Edward VII asked for a command performance and his tours in Europe and across the US were consistently sold out. At one point he was the highest paid stage performer in vaudeville and the American stage. His fascinating act succeeded not only in appearance but in manner as well, eschewing the caricature nature of female impersonation but instead presenting his "woman's persona" as a reality. This splendid stone lithograph features artwork of Eltinge dressed to the nines in the best 1918 fashion. Few examples of his work survive, and this one sheet looks lovely after professional restoration to fold wear, creases and misfolds, and tears in the borders and folds. There are chips in the borders and center crossfold, with some paper loss in the lower left corner and border. The borders have been partially airbrushed, and the linen has nearly been trimmed to the borders. Fine+ on Linen.

    Estimate: $1,000 - $2,000.
