    Description

The War of the Worlds (Paramount, 1953). One Sheet (27" X 41").
"No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own..." So begins Herbert George Wells' classic novel of alien invasion, The War of the Worlds. Wells, considered one of the fathers of science fiction, studied biology and zoology as a student in London. These interests, along with a fascination with the future, helped him develop his timeless themes in such classic novels as The Time Machine and The Island of Doctor Moreau. War had been considered as a project since the early silent days. The rights to the project were obtained by Paramount as early as 1924. Originally Cecil B. DeMille was to direct a silent version; in 1930, the project was given to Alfred Hitchcock. Finally in 1953, producer George Pal brought it to the screen. Starring Gene Barry and Ann Robinson, it tells the tale of a meteorite that lands near a small town in California. When it turns out to be the vanguard of a Martian army, scientist Barry must try and save the world. There were pinholes in the corners, and light edge wear. There was light fold wear, with the borders folded back previously, and a few extra folds. Very Fine on Linen.
