Description

The Unholy Three (MGM, 1930). Hardbound Script (9" X 11") Vault Copy.
MGM remade Tod Browning's silent film, The Unholy Three, in 1930, with Lon Chaney Sr., who stared in both the original and the remake. It tells the story of three sideshow performers who leave the circus and set up a pet shop as a front for burglary. This MGM vault copy has several different versions of the script, both full and partial, bound inside the hard cover. Included are the silent and sound versions as this was the period when exhibitors could choose between the versions. There are also revisions, dialogue continuity, a synopsis, retakes, and instructions for inserting titles. The book had been checked out of the vault, and writer J.C. Nugent signed a receipt in which he agreed "to return within a reasonable time." The signed receipt is bound into the book as well. Nugent's son, Elliott (who was the co-writer of the film), played one of the major characters in the 1930 film. A few of the pages show minor staining, and there are a few tears and some holes at the edges from where the script was unbound. A fascinating behind-the-scenes look at production in early Hollywood. Very Fine.
