    The Titfield Thunderbolt (GFD, 1953). Printer's Proof British Quad (31" X 41").
George Relph and Stanley Holloway star in this comedy, telling the story of a small English village about to lose its railway service, and the manic citizen movement when town tries to run the line itself. This was the very first comedy shot in color for Ealing Studios, producing a vibrant British quad to match. Illustrating locomotives was old hat for artist Edward Bawden, who had already done artwork for several British railway companies, and that experience shines through in this lovely country-of-origin poster. Keen-eyed collectors may notice that this poster measures larger than 30" X 40" and has borders at the sides and bottom. This is because it is a very rare printer's proof and not the finalized, full-bleed quad. Not originally part of the original printed poster, the upper border has been added after production. Restoration to this colorful quad has addressed fold wear with small tears, pinholes, few border chips, and a mild tear from the right border into the background. The poster had a misprint and some of the color was added. The linen has been trimmed to the bottom border and nearly to the top and side borders. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.

    Estimate: $1,500 - $3,000.
