Description

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Austin Chronicle, 1985). Guy Juke Austin Chronicle Original Cover Art (18" X 24").
In 1981, Austin, Texas was in need of an alternative local paper that covered events and happenings around the music city. They started publication in September, 1981, but didn't really cover the Halloween festivities until the following year. The cover for that year's edition was created by artist Guy Juke and depicted Rondo Hatton. Juke has become an internationally known and respected artist for his work in graphic designs and in particular, for his works involving dark horrific characters and rock 'n roll legends including the Ramones. Since 1982, and for the next three years, the Halloween cover for the Chronicle was created by Juke and had become a highly anticipated event. One of the interesting aspects of the covers was that they were large enough that they could be used as "cut-out" masks in case a reader suddenly ran short of costume ideas. For the 1985 Halloween cover (published on October 18, 1985) the logical choice was an homage to the film made locally and the film that had taken the world by scream, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The cover was a sensation, depicting Gunnar Hansen as the psychotic and chainsaw wielding butcher known as Leatherface. Inside the cover, Edwin Neal, another member of the film's original cast who portrayed the equally psychotic and cannibalistic hitch-hiker, demonstrated how to cut out and wear the mask. Since that time in 1985, this amazing original work of art has been in the collection of Neal and is being made available for the first time. The work is most likely done in gouache. There is a slight water "run" of black paint on the right side into the white background, but this probably happened at the time of the paintings creation. There is a slight warp to the upper right portion of the board in the black background, but other than this, the painting is in outstanding condition. From the Collection of Edwin "The Hitch-hiker" Neal. Very Fine on Canvas Board.
