Description

The St. Louis Kid (Warner Brothers, 1934). Lobby Card Set of 8 (11" X 14").
James Cagney plays Eddie Kennedy, a long-distance truck driver who becomes involved in a labor dispute between a crooked trucking firm and dairy farmers. One of the farmers dies at the hands of a hired killer, but when Eddie is jailed for the crime, he must break out, find the real killer and rescue his kidnapped girlfriend (Patricia Ellis). Cagney's magnetism has endeared audiences to less sympathetic characters than Eddie and here, despite his character's arrogance and deep self-interest, he carries the film. Also notable for Cagney fans is that -- having previously wielded his fists and grapefruit as weapons -- he decides instead to settle conflicts with his head, inventing what is now a staple piece of fight choreography in every action film issued, the headbutt! This exceedingly rare lobby card set (a Heritage first) has been restored with airbrushing to the borders and touchup. The "jail' card still show two pinholes, minor stains and small tears. The "embrace" card has a chip in the lower border, one card has a minor chip and edge tears, two cards have a corner chip, and one has a top right corner bend. The cards now display very well. Fine.
