    Description

The Scarlet Empress (Paramount, 1934). Swedish One Sheet (27" X 39") Martin Kosleck Artwork.
Marlene Dietrich reigns supreme as the German Princess Sophia Frederica, who became Catherine the Great after her arranged marriage to the mad Russian Grand Duke Peter, played brilliantly by Sam Jaffe. Director Joseph von Sternberg's elaborate and surreal set designs and lighting make this historical drama a stunning work of art to behold. This striking portrait of our leading lady perfectly matches the film's darker aesthetics, painted by German actor and personal friend of Dietrich's, Martin Kosleck. Kosleck had become friends with Dietrich through his close companion Hans von Twardowski, who played courtier Ivan Shuvolov in the film, and she soon became one Kosleck's favorite muses. Completely unlike any other image produced for the film, this unique poster is making its Heritage debut, and shows edge and fold wear, fold separations, and chips and tears at the edges. There are torn pinholes in the upper corners and archival tape on the verso. However, Kosleck's incredible piece of imagery is in good shape, and would display well in any setting. Folded, Fine/Very Fine.
