    Description

    The Raven (Universal, 1935). Lobby Card (11" X 14").
After the extraordinary success of Dracula and Frankenstein in 1931, Universal knew that horror was the next big thing. They also knew that if one star was good, two would be better, so they teamed Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi in a pair of chillers inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe. In The Raven (the other film was The Black Cat), Lugosi plays Dr. Richard Violin, a deranged surgeon obsessed with one of his patients. When he asks the girl's father for her hand in marriage, he is refused, and plots his revenge, which involves a murderous criminal (Karloff), and a dungeon/torture chamber. An intensely atmospheric and chilling picture, this is a gem of Universal Horror. This card, a first for Heritage, is called the "pendulum" card and is one of the more sinister scenes in the set. The card had toning and a small chip from the upper left corner, which has been reattached, and a crease in the lower left corner. Professional restoration has increased the beauty of this card by a faint airbrush to the borders and minor touchup to the previously mentioned conditions issues. The back of the card is still toned and tan. The card has non-uniform borders as was originally cut allowing for a larger width left border. Nothing has been trimmed. Fine+.
