    Description

The Postman Always Rings Twice (MGM, 1946). Window Card (14" X 22").
There is a thin line between love and hate, and this superb film noir has Lana Turner and John Garfield dancing over that line so many times, audiences are kept guessing about their motives until the very end. James M. Cain's book was published in 1934 at the height of the Depression and depicted the desperation that a drifter and an unsatisfied wife of a restaurant owner will go to in order to achieve their own needs, even murder. The book was a natural for the silver screen and even though the Depression was over by the early 1940s, the Hays Commissions Code of Ethics was still in force and prohibited a lot of the novel's darker and erotic moments from being filmed. It was more than a decade before a studio was able to sufficiently tone down Cain's steamy best-seller and get it past the censors. One of the "toning down" ideas employed by director Tay Garnett was dressing Turner in virginal white, in an effort to turn down the heat. The on-screen effect was totally the opposite. There is writing in the imprint area, some smudging, a small tear in the lower border, pinholes in the upper corners, corner bumps, and a light stain in the lower left corner. This is a first time offer from Heritage. Very Fine-.
