Description

The Postman Always Rings Twice (MGM, 1946). One Sheet (27" X 41").
James M. Cain's book was published in 1934 in the height of the Depression and depicted the desperation that a drifter and an unsatisfied wife of a restaurant owner will go to in order to achieve their own needs, even murder. The book was a natural for the silver screen and even though the Depression was over by the early 1940s, the Hays Commissions Code of Ethics was still in force and prohibited a lot of the novel's darker and erotic moments from being filmed. That being said, Lana Turner never smoldered more and John Garfield (as the drifter) easily falls prey to her schemes and is duped into committing the murder that propels them into an even darker abyss. This is still considered one of the best film noirs to emerge within the genre and this beautiful and lurid image captures the darkness of the movie, as Garfield is swallowed into the black. The borders have had airbrush work due to some minor chipping in the edges and there was some very minor color touchup to the fold lines and centerpoints. There was a small hole in the "a" of Garfield's credit and there was some color touchup applied to a very minor tear within Turner's face. All of these issues were addressed with professional restoration and the poster displays magnificently. The black background is essentially untouched other than the slight work on the fold lines which is rather rare for this poster. Fine+ on Linen.
