DescriptionThe Phantom of the Opera (Universal, 1925). Title Lobby Card (11" X 14") Phantom Style.
If The Hunchback of Notre Dame made Lon Chaney Sr. a superstar, the later release of The Phantom of the Opera made him a legend. Based on the novel by Gaston Leroux, Chaney managed to create a character, by subtleties of body language and facial expression, that was at once both revolting and endearing, a complex character that later versions of the story struggled to match. The result was a spectacular hit for Universal, the first entry in their forthcoming horror genre, and a film that firmly established Chaney as the reigning King of Horror. One of two different title cards produced for the picture, this image features Norman Kerry protecting Mary Philbin as he prepares to do battle with the malevolent Chaney. The card has pinholes in the borders and lower background, a light stain in the bottom border, and smudging in the borders. There is some creasing in the Phantom, a scratch through Norman Kerry, and another scratch to the lower left. The card also has a tear with a tape stain in the left border and background, small drips of paint in the right border, and a few spots of paint on the verso. Fine.
Estimate: $1,500 - $3,000.
