    Description

The Phantom of the Opera (Universal, 1925). Stereoscopic Slides (10) (3.25" X 4.5") with Camerascope Viewer.
So popular was The Phantom of the Opera, Universal Pictures president Carl Laemmle hit upon the unique idea of issuing a series of promotional "Opera glasses," or in this case, a pop-up 3-D Cameroscope that would allow the viewer to see The Phantom of the Opera on these ten stereoscopic slides. These viewers and slides were distributed in limited numbers to theater owners for previews. The scenes include Mary Philbin, Norman Kerry, Lon Chaney (as the Red Death) descending the Grand Staircase, and another of Chaney as the masked Red Death Phantom terrorizing the revelers of the Masked Ball (Please note: Universal took great lengths to keep Chaney's unmasked Phantom look a surprise, hence there are no images of him unmasked in these slides). This lot also includes the original envelope, the instructions and the glasses issued with the ten slides. These slides show only some slight creases, and one slide has a very minor surface lift. Very Fine+
