    Description

The Party by Jack Davis (United Artists, 1968). Signed Original Watercolor and Gouache Painting Poster Art on Watercolor Board (22.75" X 27").
Comic artist and illustrator extraordinaire, the late Jack Davis, had a long and varied artistic career, utilizing a range of different styles to match the mood for a wide variety of subjects. From his grotesque and inky crosshatchings for the pre-Code comic book Tales from the Crypt, detailed and dynamic illustrations for Two-Fisted Tales, to his favored scrawling figures featured in Mad Magazine, Davis boasted a unique and versatile set of skills uncommon in his field. His frenetic style proved to be a perfect match for the emerging spate of madcap comedies of the 1960s and '70s, seen prominently in such escapades as the over-the-top It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, the war comedy Kelly's Heroes, and seen here in this zany improvisation vehicle, The Party. Davis' undeniable proficiency for detailed pen work is on impressive display, the flurry of frenzied activity mirroring scene-for-scene the increasing mayhem in Peter Sellers and Blake Edwards' reunion comedy. Signed by the creator himself in the lower right corner, this is already one of the most popular of all of Davis' movie posters amongst comedy fans, and this original illustration done for the poster is a one of a kind, impossible to miss opportunity. The painting shows some color fading as indicated by the masking marks at the image edges, but the board itself has only the expected registration marks, pinholes, masking tape residue, and pencil marks typical of the artistic process. A rare and exciting opportunity for cartoon and comedy aficionados everywhere, this illustration would be a crowning acquisition to any collection. Very Fine-.
