The Mark of Zorro (United Artists, 1920). One Sheet (27" X 41"). In the late summer of 1919, readers of the "All-Story Weekly," a popular pulp magazine, may have come across a five-part story taking place in Spanish California, "The Curse of Capistrano," written by Illinois-born crime reporter Johnston McCulley. As the star of his story, McCulley created a young Californian nobleman, Don Diego Vega, who appeared to be an indolent fop to everyone who knew him, but who was in fact, by night, a masked outlaw fighting a righteous cause against oppression by the Governor of California and his army. As a signature, the outlaw left the initial of the name by which he was known, the Spanish word for "fox," also used figuratively to mean a cunning person, Zorro. Actress Mary Pickford came across McCulley's story and recommended it to her equally famous, new husband, Douglas Fairbanks. Fairbanks saw the great potential in the story and the rest is history. Offered in this lot is a beautiful, unrestored stone litho poster to this, the first swashbuckler film ever made. It has some crossfold separation and minor fold separation at the borders. There is a pinhole in all four corners. The colors are gorgeous on this very clean poster. Very Fine+.
