Description

The Mark of Zorro (United Artists, 1920). Lobby Card Set of 8 (11" X 14"). In the late summer of 1919, readers of the "All-Story Weekly," a popular pulp magazine, may have come across a five-part story taking place in Spanish California, "The Curse of Capistrano," written by Illinois-born crime reporter Johnston McCulley. As the star of his story, McCulley created a young Californian nobleman, Don Diego Vega, who appeared to be an indolent fop to everyone who knew him, but who was in fact, by night, a masked outlaw fighting a righteous cause against oppression by the Governor of California and his army. As a signature, the outlaw left the initial of the name by which he was known, the Spanish word for "fox," also used figuratively to mean a cunning person, Zorro. Actress Mary Pickford came across McCulley's story and recommended it to her equally famous, new husband, Douglas Fairbanks. Fairbanks saw the great potential in the story and the rest is history. Offered in this lot is a rare, original full set to this classic, the first of the Swashbucklers. There is a pinhole in the center top and bottom border of each card. On 2 cards there are two pinholes - top and bottom. Otherwise this set is as clean as we have ever seen these cards. They are amazing to have been printed over 85 years ago! Very Fine+.
