Description

The Maltese Falcon (Warner Brothers, 1931). CGC Graded Lobby Card (11" X 14").
Few pieces of classic paper are scarcer than items from Roy Del Ruth's 1931 adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon, and it's nearly unheard of to find a complete set of lobby cards for the film. This card comes from a complete set being offered piece by piece for the very first time at Heritage. Living up to its pre-Code status, this version of Hammett's famous novel features certain elements that the Production Code purged out of the later adaptations in 1936 and 1941. One of these changes revolves around the film's villains, two of which are seen here with Dudley Diggs playing Caspar Gutman and Otto Matieson in the role of Dr. Joel Cairo. Both the book and the 1931 movie have a clear subtext regarding implied relationships of the two men and their younger accomplice, Wilmer. Nearly all references to the personal relationships between the characters get scrubbed out of later renditions, only vaguely recognized in Peter Lorre's 1941 performance. However, it was these more explicit details that kept Warner Brothers from re-releasing the picture in 1935, paving the way for John Huston's famous remake. Cards from this era rarely surface in such great condition as this, receiving a grade of 9.0, Very Fine/Near Mint.
