Description

The Maltese Falcon (Warner Brothers, 1931). CGC Graded Lobby Card (11" X 14").
Among some of the rarest paper in the hobby, any posters from this early adaptation of The Maltese Falcon are hard to come by at best, and nearly impossible to find in near mint condition. Heritage has managed to procure not just one of these scarce lobby cards, but the full set, which is now up for auction for the first time ever. Although both the 1931 and 1941 film versions of Dashiell Hammett's famous novel keep close to the source material in plot and dialogue, the earlier production had something that John Huston's blockbuster unfortunately lacked: freedom. Released before the 1934 crackdown on Production Code compliance, Roy Del Ruth's story contained plenty of risque elements, including homosexual characters and an on screen strip search of Bebe Daniels. It was scenes like the one pictured here, where we see our two leads the morning after a busy night, that prevented Warner Brothers from re-releasing the picture under the constraining restrictions of the Production Code. However, had it not been for this hardline censorship of the original, Humphrey Bogart's acclaimed performance may have never made it to the silver screen. In exceptional shape, especially for its age, this card has a grade of 9.2, Near Mint-.
