Description

    The Magic Carpet (Columbia, 1952). Italian 4 - Foglio (55" X 78").
Italian artist Anselmo Ballester is credited with the clever design for this large format Italian stunner (Ballester is also widely known for the Italian release posters from An Affair in Trinidad, The Lady from Shanghai, Sirocco and On the Waterfront). With his abundant flair for the dramatic, the artist captures the wicked visage of Gregory Gay, the usurping Caliph of Bagdad, his shiny scimitar reflecting the images of Lucille Ball (a villainess Iraqi princess) and Patricia Medina, sweetheart of the true caliph (John Agar). Columbia had hoped to force Ball to break her contract by making her appear in this low budget movie, but the irrepressible actress completed the picture, looking quite alluring in harem garb, despite being several months pregnant during the filming. A first time offer from Heritage, the poster has been restored with touchup to folds, crossfold separation, a chip in the top border, and pinholes in the borders. Faint bleed through from a stamp on the verso can still be detected. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
