DescriptionThe Letter (Paramount, 1929). Full-Bleed One Sheet (27" X 41") Style B.
Jean de Limur's The Letter is the first film version of Somerset Maugham's play (Bette Davis stars in the better known remake in 1940) and is the only surviving sound picture of the great stage and screen actress Jeanne Eagels. Eagels plays the cheating wife of a Malayan plantation owner, portrayed by Reginald Owen in his American debut, a neglectful spouse that ignores his bored wife. Eagels later kicks off the scandalous plot when she shoots her illicit lover, Herbert Marshall (who would play the husband in the Davis remake), claiming he assaulted her when he tries to leave her for another woman. Sadly, Eagels suddenly died shortly after the film's release, receiving a posthumous Oscar nomination for her performance. A beautiful rendering of an anguished Eagels captures the viewer's attention on this very rare full-bleed stone litho one sheet, produced specifically for the picture's silent release. Only offered once before at Heritage, this poster is a unique find for connoisseurs of early Hollywood film! It is now ready for display after touchup to the folds, mild tears, pinholes in the background, and creases at the corners and folds. There was a small chip at the bottom edge, writing in the black background, and Jeanne Eagles' credit has been airbrushed. The skilled conservation of this beautiful poster has left no signs of the previous wear, making it a prime piece for any collection! Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
Estimate: $6,000 - $12,000.
