The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Universal, 1924). Folded, Very Fine-. German Four Panel (72" X 108").
Aptly renowned as the Man of a Thousand Faces, Lon Chaney holds the distinction of being the screen's first master of movie make-up. Already a talented actor capable of powerful performances, Chaney's unique brand of make-up artistry made him the most desired character actor in Silent Era Hollywood. Adaptability and innovation became the hallmarks of his career, creating the illusion of various physical deformities through the use of prosthetics and practical effects. Audiences saw the first of Chaney's truly astounding transformations in his role as Victor Hugo's deformed bell-ringer, Quasimodo, one of his most iconic portrayals alongside Gaston Leroux's Eric in 1925's The Phantom of the Opera. As such, posters from these famed novel-to-screen adaptations are always in excessive demand among collectors, as they are among some of the rarest items in the hobby. This is especially true for larger pieces, which have a nearly unmatched degree of scarcity and almost never make appearances at auction. Heritage has the greatest pleasure in offering this stunning four-paneled German poster, the only complete copy known to have survived to today. As beautiful as it is rare, it boasts stone litho printing with a gorgeous array of colors and has been well preserved over the years. It shows such minimal issues as slight edge and fold wear, minor fold separations, pinholes, and a few isolated small chips. Other signs of use include some toning in the borders, especially at the top, as well as an ink stamp in the "D" of "Der." There is a mottled printing irregularity in the top left black background, however this is from when the poster was originally created and does not affect the grade. Folded, Very Fine-.

    Estimate: $4,500 - $9,000.
