Description

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (RKO, 1948). First Post War Release Italian 4 - Foglio (54" X 78").
This lush, hauntingly beautiful poster by artist Ercole Brini was inspired by the stunning and sensitive portrayal Charles Laughton brings to Victor Hugo's deformed bell-ringer, Quasimodo. The first incarnation of the tale in the sound era, the film presents a daringly different take on the legendary hunchback than the more monstrous character immortalized in 1923 by Lon Chaney. Laughton's Quasimodo is a tender, almost poetic creature who falls in love with the gypsy girl Esmeralda (Maureen O'Hara). When she is wrongly accused of murder and sentenced to the gallows, Quasimodo rescues her, at the cost of his own life. Professional restoration has addressed tears in the bottom and left border that extend into the artwork, and small chips in the credits. There is a 2" X 3" patch in the left border. Overall, the poster is simply dazzling, and is the first one of this style and format Heritage has sold. Fine+ on Linen.
