    Description

The House of Silence (Paramount, 1918). One Sheet (28.25" X 41").
Silent era action hero and heartthrob, Wallace Reid, takes top billing in this crime drama under the direction of Donald Crisp alongside Ann Little, Winter Hall, and Adele Farrington. Scandalously set in a "House of Ill Repute," many of the film reels were sent to the chopping block upon reaching the local state and city film censorship boards, with scenes, lines, and intertitles cut to be less offensive to general audience members. In keeping with its branded "Adults Only" status, this beautiful stone litho one sheet features Ann Little in what would have been considered an unseemly state of undress at the time, a small foil to state censorship efforts. Released in 1918, this feature film hit theatres just one year prior to Reid's injury in a 1919 train crash, beginning the downward spiral of the star's declining health and tragic death. Professional restoration has addressed diagonal folds in each corner through the background, vertical tears in the lower horizontal fold, a tear in Ann Little's dressing gown, small chips in the borders, a chip in the lower right border, and has applied touchup to the folds. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
