Description

The Half-Breed (Triangle, 1916). Six Sheet (78.5" X 80").
A find that could only be described as a singular remnant from an age long past, this first time offer from Heritage has the distinguished honor of being the only known copy remaining from this early Douglas Fairbanks film, a piece that hasn't been seen by audiences for nearly a century. Though the successful writer/actor team of author Anita Loos and the young Fairbanks usually indulged in a series of athletic adventures and romantic comedies, this second-time collaboration between the duo could only be classified as a thoroughly serious Western drama. Famed director Allan Dwan, later known for such works as The Sands of Iwo Jima and Heidi, joins the two in their adaptation of Bret Harte's Western Novella In the Carquinez Woods, an ambitious project chosen by Fairbanks in an effort to expand his acting range. Delicately dealing with a subject matter that would remain controversial well through the 20th century, Fairbanks plays Lo Dorman, a young man of mixed white and American Indian heritage with a tragic past, attempting to rejoin a resistant white society. Interracial relationships, social status, and the cruelty of prejudice all play their part in this romantic drama, a daring piece of cinema for its time. This stunning stone litho six sheet features all of the major players prominently displayed, with Fairbanks joined by Alma Reubens, Sam DeGrasse, and Jewel Carmen. Already in excellent condition, the poster has only had minor restoration to address small fold tears, minor chips in the upper border, and a bend in the upper left corner. Touchup has been applied to the folds. Very Fine on Linen.
