Description

The Golem (Paramount, 1920). Title Lobby Card (11" X 14").
Certainly found in the pantheon of monumental horror films, The Golem is also considered a landmark of early German Expressionism. Somber, doleful cinematography and highly stylized sets put this film in a class of its own during the early 20th century. From actor-director Paul Wegener, it was inspired by a mythical creature of Jewish lore. Set in medieval Prague, the film depicts a rabbi (Albert Steinruck) who devises a plan to protect his people from the Emperor's order of expulsion. He creates a clay monster, called a Golem, to save the day. And lest romance be forgotten, a love triangle is added between the rabbi's daughter (Lyda Salmanova), the rabbi's assistant (Ernst Deutsch), and a messenger for the Emperor (Lathar Menthel). Heritage is thrilled to offer for the first time a title card from this historically important film, one of a very small number known to exist. The imposing Golem (Wegener himself) can be seen embarking on a furious rampage, lumbering about, distressed maiden in his arms. Not only is the title card almost impossible to find, this one is in outstanding condition. At more than 90 years old, it shows only pinholes in the borders and a smudge in the right border. Near Mint-.
