Description

The German Curse in Russia (Pathe, 1918). One Sheet (27.75" X 41").
An unspeakably important and truly singular piece of priceless historical value lost to the passage of time, Captain Donald C. Thompson's record of the increasing agitation and chaos in the streets of Petrograd (now St. Petersburg) was one of the scant few cinematic accounts of the Russian Revolution. Arriving just one month before the February revolt, Thompson and reporter Florence Harper's goal was to cover the Russian clash against the Kaiser's German army at WWI's Eastern front. Instead, Thompson and Harper captured the overthrow of a dynasty and the resulting tumult, all the while dodging bullets as the Provisional Government crumbled around them. Departing shortly before the Bolshevik October coup, Thompson's five-reel documentary was the sole American cinematic account of the Russian upheaval, but only a published book of photos titled Bloodstained Russia/The Crime of the Twentieth Century remains of the film, giving hints to its invaluable information. Never before sold at auction and a Heritage first, this breathtaking stone litho image is the original poster for Thompson's legendary film. Professional restoration has addressed small tears in the borders and folds, extra horizontal creases and misfolds, creasing with some tears, chips in the child's leg and stomach, and touchup has been applied to the folds. The bottom right corner has been replaced, reaching into the green border and background. Fine on Linen.
