The Circus (United Artists, 1928). Fine+ on Linen. One Sheet (28" X 41") Hap Hadley Artwork.
As one of Charlie Chaplin's best and beloved films, The Circus represents more than just an achievement of excellent slapstick and talented stunts, it was a triumph of sheer determination. Despite Chaplin receiving a Special Academy Award specifically for "Writing, Acting, Directing, and Producing The Circus," this picture coincided with one of the darkest periods in Chaplin's career. Several major difficulties befell the picture, from ruined film negatives, to an entire circus train being stolen by drunken college boys, to a fire ravaging Chaplin's studio, all compounded by Chaplin's scandalous divorce form Lita Grey. Any of these crises might snuff out any hope of a picture seeing the inside of a theater, had the mastermind of the project been anyone with less zeal and determination than that of Charlie Chaplin. It goes without saying that original one sheets for Chaplin titles are at the top of many a collector's list, especially this incredible stone litho piece illustrated by the one and only Hap Hadley. Restoration on this one sheet has been applied to slight fold wear and separation, creases, small tears, and pinholes. Also addressed were some chips, mostly in the borders. The borders have been airbrushed, and there is a minor post-restoration chip in the airbrushing at the right edge. Still visible is some fading to the colors, though there is little in the way of damage to the interior paper.
