    Description

The Bride of Frankenstein (Universal, 1935). Very Fine- on Linen. Full-Bleed Swedish One Sheet (27" X 39.25") Fuchs Artwork.
James Whale's sequel to his 1931 masterpiece Frankenstein quickly became a classic in its own right, surpassing the original in many ways. Boris Karloff and Colin Clive return as the monster and his maker, and Ernest Thesiger is pure genius as the mad Dr. Pretorius. Dr. Frankenstein is torn between his new bride Elizabeth (Valerie Hobson) and his desire to continue his gruesome experiments with Pretorius. When Frankenstein is blackmailed into creating another monster, the Bride is born, played beautifully by Elsa Lanchester, who also stars in a dual role as the narrator Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. The superb makeup by Jack Pierce, gothic sets, and powerful performances by the stars make this a flawless masterpiece. This Swedish one sheet boasts artwork by Fuchs, who had a prodigious career producing posters that also included pieces for The Invisible Ray, My Man Godfrey, Pack Up Your Troubles, 20th Century and Show Boat. Fuchs was brilliant with profiles and shadows, as seen in this image of the monster and his mate set off by garish shades of yellow and green. Professional touchup has corrected a couple of moderate tears in the upper text, as well as a tear near the top right corner that extended into the top right background with a minor chip. The bottom right corner has airbrushing in the background for some bits of paper loss. Signs of handling still apparent after restoration include some foxing and unobtrusive stains at the upper edge, as well as a few thin surface scuffs in the interior. Very Fine- on Linen.
