DescriptionThe Black Cat (Universal, 1934). Very Fine-. Lobby Card (11" X 14").
Edgar G. Ulmer's adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat is the first of eight films to pair the giants of horror, Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. So strong was the content--incest, murder, torture, devil worship, and perverse psychological obsessions--the picture was banned in Austria, Finland, and Italy. Karloff and Lugosi are at their evil best as they play a game of chess to determine the fate of a young couple. A favorite among collectors for its occult imagery, this fantastic and exceptionally rare scene card, known as the "Black Mass" card, makes its first appearance for auction at Heritage. This particular card was on display in 1999 at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City for the American Century: Art and Culture 1900-2000 exhibit. The lobby has benefitted from light partial touchup to pinholes, a few minor stains, and thin surface scuffs in the interior. Still visible is slight edge wear, minute tears, a soft horizontal crease, and unobtrusive stains. Very Fine-.
Estimate: $5,000 - $10,000.
