The Bitter Tea of General Yen (Columbia, 1933). Very Fine. Title Lobby Card (11" X 14"). From the Mike Kaplan Collection.
There is no doubt that this Frank Capra picture would never have seen the inside of a theater had it been released just one year later, when the Hays commission began their stringent enforcement of the Production Code and its stance on interracial relationships. Capra cast one of his most frequent leading ladies, Barbara Stanwyck, as a sheltered missionary that falls for a Chinese warlord during the Chinese revolution against British rule, played by Nils Asther. Unfortunately, the concept of miscegenation for a 1930s audience was such a taboo that the film flopped, getting pulled six days early from the inaugural run at Radio City Music Hall. This lack of audience support meant the film had a narrow distribution, leading to a scarcity of original paper from the title. This high grade card has the original varnish finish of Columbia's early 1930s lobbies. General signs of handling include light creases, pinholes, a couple of minor tears, or small stains. There is also a thin dust shadow in the top border, as well as a few faint surface scuffs.

    Estimate: $1,500 - $3,000.
