DescriptionThe Big House (MGM, 1930). Good/Very Good on Linen. Rotogravure One Sheet (28" X 42"). From the Mike Kaplan Collection.
Presented in this format at Heritage for the first time, this is the only known copy of this rotogravure style. Based off of Lennox Robinson's story of the same name, critics praised George W. Hill for his expert direction, the talented acting portrayed by the likes of Wallace Beery and Chester Morris, and its technical achievements with sound and photography. In fact, this film gained an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture, earned Frances Marion the award for Best Writing achievement, gave Douglas Shearer the very first Academy Award for sound, and kicked Beery's career into high gear with his first Academy Award nomination. This rotogravure one sheet has benefitted from conservation to fold wear and separation, tears in the interior, small chips, and pinholes. Also corrected were slight trims to the upper and lower borders, and trims nearly to the printing in the side borders. The majority of the background has been airbrushed. There are a few minor stains still visible.
Estimate: $3,000 - $6,000.
