The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (20th Century Fox, 1939). Six Sheet (81" X 81"). Considered to be one of the best in the series, this is the second film to feature Basil Rathbone as Arthur Conan Doyle's famed detective and the first to feature Holmes' arch-enemy, Professor Moriarty (played by George Zucco). The story was based on the famed stage play by William Gillette and was the film which featured the oft-repeated quote "Elementary, my dear Watson." Certainly this extremely rare six sheet is among the very best of the Sherlock Holmes poster images. Until this copy showed up, no one had ever seen this large sized poster for the title. This very desirable poster has only a few minor flaws for its age, with edge wear and tears (some reinforced on the back with magic tape), a very small piece missing on the edge which disappears when the pieces are put together, and some misfolds and light fold wear with small cross fold separation. It also has a small Danish censor stamp (although this is the American paper) to the right of the image of Holmes dated 1939-40. The color is still bright and fresh and the paper supple and white. Very Fine+.
