    Description

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (20th Century Fox, 1939). Insert (14" X 36").
Paper from this film is very scarce, and Heritage is pleased to present for the first time the insert format. 20th Century Fox had such a hit with their first attempt at Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional sleuth Sherlock Holmes in Hound of the Baskervilles starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson, that this wonderful picture would follow. Set in Victorian England (all of the later Universal films would be set in contemporary time), it matches Holmes against his arch rival, Professor Moriarty, who is set to steal the Crown Jewels. Co-starring Ida Lupino and George Zucco as Moriarty, this classic film would set the benchmark for all of the twelve other movies made at Universal Studio in the series. Interestingly enough, this was the only entry in the film series not based on a Doyle story, but on the famous stage play by William Gillette. Rathbone has this insert all to his inquisitive self, donning his signature cap and tweeds, revolver in hand. Minor touchup has been applied to a few of the letters, the folds, and a tear in the bottom right that extends into the background. Fine/Very Fine on Paper.
