Description

The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao (MGM, 1964). Joseph Smith Original Movie Poster Art (17" X 20.5").
In one of the greatest of all fantasy films, Tony Randall stars as the mysterious Dr. Lao, an ancient man from China who has the rare ability to force people into facing who and what they are. He does this through his traveling magic show and through his multiple entities. The makeup created by William Tuttle would earn the artist a Special Oscar and special effects wizard Jim Danforth would receive a nomination for an Oscar as well. When the time came for MGM to produce the posters, they turned to the trusted talents of Joseph Smith to illustrate their work. Smith was one of the most prolific talents working in Hollywood, turning out some of the best movie posters of the time including Kiss of the Vampire, The Day of the Triffids (see the original art for this campaign in another Heritage lot), The Brides of Dracula and many others. For this campaign he did a pen and ink drawing of Tony Randall in all of Dr. Lao's many guises, "MGM didn't know what to do to sell the picture. Tony Randall wasn't a big name. They didn't want to spend a lot of money on it, but they wanted it to be outlandish, " Smith recalled. MGM certainly got their wish as this artwork is as fondly remembered as the film. The art itself is in near mint condition. There is some tape around the edges on the verso and some tape lifts causing some surface abrasions as well. Since all of this is on the verso, the artwork appears very clean and is one of the best fantasy pieces of original art used on a well known poster that we've had the privilege of offering. Very Fine+ on Cardstock.
