Description
Robin Hood (United Artists, 1922). Very Good/Fine on Linen. One Sheet (27.75" X 41").As one of the co-founders of United Artists in 1919, Douglas Fairbanks was able to independently produce his own pictures. He transformed himself from an accomplished comic actor into a romantic swashbuckler, with films such as The Mark of Zorro and The Three Musketeers. In his third adventure film, Fairbanks takes up the role of the legendary Robin Hood, as he protects the oppressed English from the usurper King John. The film was a visual spectacle, with its massive sets for Fairbanks to show off his astounding athletic prowess; included amongst them was a castle that had the reputation of being the largest set built for any silent movie. Audiences were thoroughly dazzled and made Robin Hood a smash hit, nearly doubling its production cost of $1.4 million. Note that Douglas Fairbanks Sr (his son, Douglas Jr was also a very accomplished actor) was a Broadway stage actor who did not move to Hollywood until 1915, when he was 32, and his son was 6. Even though Fairbanks seemed on the older side to be an "action hero", his great physical skills made his movies major successes, and by 1918 he was Hollywood's most popular and highest paid actor. He started an affair with Mary Pickford (then the highest paid actress) and in 1918 he was divorced, and he married Pickford in 1920! Offered here for the first time from Heritage is a rare image of Robin Hood romancing his beloved Maid Marian. Touchup has been applied to fold wear, chips in the folds, significant tears, misfolds, stains, and paper loss in the left middle horizontal fold. Airbrushing has been applied to the upper background and parts of the borders have been replaced and airbrushed.
