    Description

    Superman (Columbia, 1948). Three Sheet (41" X 81").
Collectors will not want to miss the opportunity to add this stellar, large format poster featuring the ultimate superhero in action. Republic Pictures actually planned a Superman project in 1940, but couldn't come to terms with DC Comics. They kept the scripts, penciled in some changes, ordered new costumes, and produced The Mysterious Doctor Satan and The Adventures of Captain Marvel . Eventually, Paramount acquired the rights and flipped the project to the Fleischer brothers, who produced their popular animated series. Sam Katzman then assumed the rights, offering them to Universal and then Republic, but they both passed. Columbia Studios then purchased the rights and finally in 1948, Superman was headed to the big screen. This unique three sheet for the first big screen serial, has fabulous art very true to the comic book origins, and features a wonderful image of the icily sexy villainess, The Spider Lady (Carol Forman). There are four scenes featuring Superman in the bottom panel. Note the cast credits; "Superman" is featured as a cast member. A fun advertising campaign from Columbia suggested that because they couldn't find an actor to play him sufficiently, they had hired Superman himself. Kirk Alyn, they stated, was only playing Clark Kent! The poster has been linenbacked that shows a slight lifting at the middle joint seam. There were pinholes in the corners, and fold wear with crossfold separations and small chips in the bottom panel. The linen has been trimmed to the edge of the poster. Fine+ on Linen.
