    Description

    Sunset Boulevard (Paramount, 1950). Insert (14" X 36").
It's no wonder fans adore the insert format from director Billy Wilder's 1950 dark satire of the superficial Hollywood life. Glancing at it, one can almost hear the seething, glowering Gloria Swanson spewing vitriol at her castmates in her role as a washed up silent film star. At the bottom of the poster is a shot from the opening scene, which sets the mood perfectly -- police fishing the dead body of screenwriter Joe Gillis (William Holden) out of a swimming pool. Gillis, in debt and bankrupt of any writing projects, stumbles across has-been actress Norma Desmond (Swanson) in what appears to be an abandoned Sunset Boulevard mansion. Short on options, Gillis agrees to pen a comeback script for Desmond, ultimately becoming her kept man. Met with rave reviews, the film was nominated for Best Picture, and the two leads for Best Actor and Best Actress. Wilder and Charles Brackett won Best Screenplay. The insert displays nicely, with only minor wear: a small tear in the top and left border, tiny paper lift in the pool, small stain in the top right border and red background, creasing in the top border, a firm horizontal crease in the lower section, and very small creases within. Rolled, Fine/Very Fine.
