Stagecoach (United Artists, 1939). Fine+ on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 41"). From the Mike Kaplan Collection.
This rare and beautiful poster should top the lists of every Western collector, not only for its fantastic stone litho image full of frontier adventure, but because the poster has not been offered at Heritage for five years. This particular copy was once displayed at the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Grand Lobby Gallery, as well as the Denver Art Museum, and it can be found in the book Reel Art, Great Posters from the Golden Age of the Silver Screen (Abbeville Press, 1988) by Stephen Rebello and Richard Allen. In early 1939, the now-legendary John Wayne would have been considered a B-list actor known mainly for Poverty Row Westerns at Republic, Universal and Columbia, which caused director John Ford more than a few problems when it came to getting funding from United Artists for this film. Ford fought the studio on Wayne's behalf, managing to get approval from producer Robert Wagner only when the Duke received the second lowest salary among the main cast. Of course, Ford's casting instincts proved themselves, once award season rolled around, with the film gaining seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Promising all of the exciting action any Western fan could want with its image alone, the poster has had professional touchup applied to the folds, small chips, pinholes, and some tears, a few of which extended into the printing. There are very faint stains still visible in the title. The borders have had airbrush work. The upper and lower borders were trimmed slightly into the printing and have since been skillfully replaced. It's not often that collectors have the opportunity to own such an important piece of Hollywood history, and should not let this one sheet pass them by!

    Estimate: $30,000 - $60,000.
