Description
The Endless Summer (Bruce Brown Films, 1964). Rolled, Very Fine. Silkscreen Poster (40" X 60"). John Van Hamersveld Artwork.Offered for the first time at Heritage, this is an exceedingly rare original 40" X 60" for the pioneering surf documentary The Endless Summer. The poster's central image by artist John Van Hamersveld, featuring silhouetted surfers on a neon beach, has become one of the most iconic compositions of the 1960s and remains synonymous with surf culture to this day. Created in 1964 by Southern California printer Eric Askew, this poster predates the film obtaining theatrical distribution and was intended for use at the self-financed four-wall screenings held by director Bruce Brown and R. Paul Allen, assistant cinematographer and producer of original marketing and presentations for promotion of the film. Van Hamersveld has inscribed "To the Surf World," signed the piece, and dated at the time of his signing, 1986, in pencil in the blank bottom area. The poster is accompanied by a detailed Letter of Authenticity from Allen. Original versions of this important and sought-after poster are seldom made available for public sale. An example resides in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian, and the work has been exhibited in prominent institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Los Angeles' LACMA. Completely unrestored, the poster exhibits a faint handling crease in the pink area, a tiny 0.75" tear at the bottom edge, a missing 1.5" sliver from the extreme top right corner. The colors are as eye-popping as the day it was screened and the piece would claim a place of pride in any private collection or cultural institution.
